WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR TREATMENT

When you make an appointment, you will receive email confirmation which includes a health and lifestyle questionnaire.  It is important that this is completed fully as it helps to build a picture of your issue and how best to help.  The information also helps screen for contraindications to your treatment which is important for your safety.

Your appointment is your time. You will be advised on what might work to help you, however you do not have to consent to anything that you are not happy with. There are always alternative techniques and it is important for you to be comfortable.

To treat you effectively it will be necessary for you to remove some items of clothing depending on the area to be treated. I have a collection of drapes and towels, so you feel comfortable.  Your privacy will be respected.  For women needing treatment to their back, neck or shoulders a rear fastening bra is helpful.

My Scope of Practice:

As a level 5 Soft Tissue Therapist I use various techniques to help with musculoskeletal issues.  Areas of pain and joint range of movement will be assessed. I can use my knowledge to give you an idea of what is going on, what I think will help and suggest exercises for you to try. I can also tape an area if necessary. Massage is used to warm and relax tissue, encouraging blood flow, and identifying and releasing areas of tension. Additional techniques are then integrated to the massage so that tissue is helped to relax, stretch, improve joint mobility and calm the nervous system.  These techniques may involve the application of pressure to an area of pain, joint mobilisation and the contraction of muscles against resistance.  You will be talked through these techniques.

What is Outside my Scope of Practice:

I am not an allied healthcare professional and therefore cannot give a you a ‘diagnosis’ of your problem and I am unable to recommend or prescribe medication.  If I feel an issue requires more detailed assessment, you will be referred to your GP, or another health professional such as an osteopath, physiotherapist or podiatrist who will be able to diagnose you.  Patient safety is my absolute priority.
